churlishly One of my favorite things about Edward Abbey (and his friends) is that on his death his friends (at his request) took his body into the desert and buried in some hidden place, and like Moses, “No one to this day knows where he is buried.” Texas is now starting a pilot project to make this a whole business – green burials in state parks. No chemicals, no lead coffins – just back to the earth. This sounds fabulous. It’s almost worth getting a dog for this reason, knowing that he’s likely to come back to the campsite gnawing on a human skull. And this will make late-night stories by campfire legitimately terrifying again.
