I don’t want to turn this into another affirmation of real religion as opposed to superstitious superficiality, BUT…

http://stephanepereira.com/wp-content/shell20211028.php A really revolting bit of superstitious superficiality from the Christian News Wire.  The idea is that God decided to kill the entire family of the director of an abortion clinic, but not the director himself (collateral damage, I suppose; but pretty good for God, whose aim is not good).  Which gives me an idea: maybe God, to avenge himself on women who have had abortions, can kill the fetuses they abort!  That way, everyone goes home happy.  It punishes the women by killing their children and satisfies them at the same time.  Then again, maybe that’s the way it works already.

I don’t want to turn this tragic event into some creepy spiritual ‘I told you so’ moment, but I think of the time spent outside of Feldkamp’s – Pam Feldkamp laughing at the fetal development signs, Bud Feldkamp trying not to make eye contact as he got into his car with a small child in tow – and I think of the haunting words, ‘Think of your children.’ I wonder if those words were haunting Feldkamp as well as he stood in the snow among the remains of loved ones, just feet from the ‘Tomb of the Unborn’?

The longer I live, the more convinced I am that when a person prefaces anything by saying, “I don’t want to…”, that means that that is precisely what they are intending to do.  They just know it’s wrong, and imagine the disclaimer will make it okay.

On this type of theology, I will say that it is materialism – prosperity good, death, poverty, illness bad – there is nothing spiritual or transcendent about it at all.  If you are willing to ignore 50% or more of the available evidence and have some real anger issues you’d rather not confront, this is a great religion for you.
