http://gradsgate.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=https://gradsgate.com/wp-admin/ Dear Neighbor, My name is John Kuhner, and I’m asking for your vote for Denning Town Council. I’ve lived here for five years – long enough to convince me that Denning is my home and I want to do my part for the town by serving on the town council. I may be a bit […]

Letter to Denning Voters.
24-Oct-13Harvesting Beechnuts.
12-Oct-13Chaklāsi It’s been a bad year for a lot of garden crops for me – if the deer can eat they have – but for fruit and nuts it’s been extraordinary – heavy peaches, heavy apples, heavy walnuts. And now the beechnuts are starting to drop to the forest floor, and it’s a superb year for […]
Alta petant aquilae.
02-Oct-13A day off, and I couldn’t help myself – I just had to get into the high mountains. Here’s where I spent much of my day, on this rock. Almost ready to burst with the happiness of being immersed in the unearnedly beautiful.
Working the Garlic Festival.
01-Oct-13For the past few days, I’ve been frenetically busy, but framed, as hard work often is, by quiet, melancholy moments – and in those moments I’ve heard this music. I worked the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival for Catskill Native Nursery this past weekend, and the carnival atmosphere and silly joy of these events is always […]
Plateau Mountain.
25-Sep-13As I headed up Plateau Mountain yesterday I thought to myself, “John, you’re doing this all wrong, Plateau you do in the morning, to get the light on the mountains, and Giant Ledge in the evening.” But it was just the right hike to do, even though the picture-into-the-light can’t capture it. So beautiful. The […]
The Politics of Dancing.
22-Sep-13Now that I’m a candidate for Town Council, there’s no skipping town events. So I came right from work to the Blue Hill Lodge’s yearly party, held on the construction site of the new brewery going up behind the current site. When I bought my house in Claryville all we had was the Claryville Country […]
Campaign for Town Council.
22-Sep-13On Friday, September 13th I got the Democratic Party Nomination for a seat on the Denning Town Council. Page with links here.
First 20 Gallons of Apples.
18-Sep-13I’ve started harvesting the apples. I’m got some neighbors who don’t gather the apples, and they’ve given me permission to harvest. These apples look green, but are actually quite ripe – even quite sweet. The plan is to make apple butter this year in great quantities.
The Campaign Begins.
17-Sep-13My “campaign staff” designed a postcard for me to hand out at campaign events. It’s great and I love it: it’s of our town garden, which I did the plant design for and which I worked hard on. And the plants in the foreground are Agastache foeniculum and Hypericum “Gemo,” plants that I love and […]
Some Thoreau.
02-Oct-13What a writer this guy is. And so beautiful a soul. On loneliness: But like those women of Malamocco and Pelestrina [towns on the Venetian lagoon], who when their husbands are fishing at sea, repair to the shore and sing their shrill songs at evening, till they hear the voices of their husbands in reply […]
