Is there anything in the world more lovely than Suzanne Vega? Besides the voice, the music, the esprit, the face, the whole thing, she’s a New Yorker who gets it and passes it on. The link brings you to a delightful article she wrote about learning to drive (as a 43-year-old, in the city; my, what memories that brings back for me). Her website indicates that she is doing a concert with Philip Glass, of all people, in late March in NYC. It’s enough to make me a little bit homesick, I’ll confess.

i saw her live about a year ago. i arrived late and only saw 3 songs, but they were 3 i knew well: marlene on the wall, luka, and tom’s diner. in terms of the sound and playing, it was one of the more perfectly rendered performances i had ever seen. everything was crystal clear and full of nuance. i see very few shows by bands in the new york folk coffeehouse scene that she came from, but i think because these bands operate within the self-imposed constraints of low volume and simplicity, they become much more focused on musicianship and subtlety, and it was a real treat to experience that (for once!).
Her live performances, due to this craftsmanship you speak of, are just as good as her recordings. And her writing – lyrics as well as music – is simply superb.
