Andrew Sullivan for Lent.
18-Feb-10I meditated on this piece by Sullivan all day yesterday. A friend called it the best thing he’s ever written. I don’t know what to do about it all, but I’ll start with two things: never presuming we are better than any other dictator or government we think we can topple or replace; trying to call crazy belligerent Americans away from this madness. “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
And this from Reinhold Niebuhr as well. I don’t know Niebuhr’s works, but from this one excerpt I can tell he gets it.
